Charlie Gosling

Biography

Charlie Gosling was the first of six artists exhibiting as part of the Incubator 21 program. Born and raised in Hackney, he is currently studying Fine Art at Camberwell College of Arts. Focusing on portraiture, Gosling’s work examines the ways in which a subject’s peculiarities can act as windows into their inner world. Painting the skew of a tie with the same devotion as the lips of a loved one, Gosling’s practice reflects a sustained interest in capturing the quirks of his subjects and revealing the ineffable through them - creating portraits that are lighthearted in style, yet strikingly ambitious in their mission. Inspired by the portraits of service personnel by Chaïm Soutine (1893-1943), Gosling’s most recent work is a series of drawings and paintings of Uber drivers. These pieces ask us to consider the complexities present in faces which, over time, appear ubiquitous and often go unnoticed. The work, to date, demonstrates Gosling’s remarkable ability to recognise and reveal that which is often present but rarely seen.
